Qeynos Rises First Impressions and Screenshots

EQ2_000077

The above is a shot of two NPCs, A Knight and A Lady, whose love story plays out without them ever speaking a word to once another.  They are easy to miss but one of the little details that blew me away.  I rode around for about an hour absorbing the sometimes very subtle changes, especially compared to the dramatic changes that occurred when Freeport was revamped, and taking screenshots.  Then I started doing the new quest lines present in the city, both racial and archetype.

There was the appropriate amount of “OMG they NERFED my class out of existence” chat going on in general, but I ignored it for the most part.  All of the class changes, both PvE and PvP have been available in patch notes for the test server for weeks now and I don’t have any patience or sympathy for players that complain once a patch goes live.  Seriously, it has to be one of my biggest pet peeves in any game.  (leaving soapbox now)

Overall, Qeynos looks amazing.  Changes are sometimes very subtle but add all of those subtle changes together and the effect is beautiful.  Honestly, SOE did a fantastic job with the changes.  Qeynos needed a face-lift much more than it needed a complete overhaul like Freeport.  While I do miss the suburbs, like Willow Wood and Nettleville, their instanced appearance in-game (what little I’ve done in them so far) are extremely well done and do not detract from the old neighborhood.  There are now very definite stories for each neighborhood, Gnolls in Willow Wood or crazed Freebloods and aggressive Council of Ten Militia in Nettleville.  Those stories are beginning to unfold for my level 23 Inquisitor.

Lighting changes are beautiful.  The sun shafts and god rays are truly some of the best I’ve ever seen in any game.  The little details on table edges or wall details are what makes the changes subtle but substantial.  No, chances are you aren’t going to walk in through the gate from Antonica and be blown away at first look, but upon closer inspection you will be extremely pleased.  From the rain in town, sound of the rain was phenomenal by the way, to the reflections of water or how rain impacts water, the small details are truly what makes this game update great.

But my overall favorite thing from the Qeynos update, non-quest related, is far and away the updated armors on NPCs.  The updated Qeynos guard armor is beautiful.  Seriously, while I’m glad SOE made the guard armor and mounts for both Freeport and Qeynos available on the Station Cash store yesterday, my intense desire for the other armors I saw yesterday is immense!  The mage armor on the Concordium mages is stellar, the Chaos Orchestra armor blew me away, Celestial Watch armor had me drooling, and the Tunarian Alliance armor was phenomenal.  Please make those armors obtainable somehow!

Game Update 64: Qeynos Rises

EverQuest2 2012-07-24 09-18-59-13

Game Update 64 went live on the servers this morning.  Patch Notes can be found here and general overview can be found here.  In general, there are changes some minor some not so minor, to all classes in both PvE and PvP game play.  There is now a public quest in Antonica and class and racial quests located in Qeynos.

The servers are still down as of this posting, so I haven’t gotten a look at the new environment yet.  As soon as I do I will post pictures and impressions.

Guild Wars 2 Final Open Beta Weekend

A little background history is necessary here.  Guild Wars was the first MMO I ever played.  It held immense appeal after the hundreds of XBox 360 hours I had logged in Oblivion.    Hubby bought himself a copy too, but always told me that it wasn’t a “true” MMO, but he was gracious enough to play with me when I asked and didn’t get too frustrated with me horribly gaming skills when he did.  The game served as a nice, gentle introduction into the MMO genre and eventually led to WOW, Everquest 2, and others but I quickly outgrew the game once I tried others in the genre.

Over the years, news about Guild Wars 2 was hit or miss and then finally, open beta weekends arrived this year.  Even though I was one of those lucky 1 million people who successfully registered for open beta weekends I never got an invite.  And to be honest, after being burned by many “AAA” titles in recent years, neither of us was willing to pre-purchase the game just to get access to an open beta when hubby truly did not like the first installment of the game.  However, I was lucky enough to receive a beta key from the Massively give away last week and waited to log-in for the first time as patiently as I could.

I quickly decided while the game loaded to try ever class at least once and every race at least once.  I wasn’t interested in chewing through content or seeing as much of Tyria as I could.  Rather I wanted to see if the introduction of new playable races worked, if the changes to professions and the elimination of professions was game destroying, and how character creation was.

The new playable races include the Charr, the Asura, the Norn, and the Sylvari.  You can of course still create and play as a Human.  First character I created was an Asura Engineer, followed quickly by a Charr Guardian, Sylvari Elementalist, Norn Mesmer, and human Warrior.   I also briefly created and played, until about level 5 a Necromancer, Ranger, and Thief.  Character slots were limited to five so early characters were created and deleted to try new professions.

Character creation needs to be discussed in two parts, the character look and the backstory.  Backstory first just because it is so well done and unique in my experience.  Once you are satisfied with how your character looks, you are then asked a series of question about your character which vary by race and profession.  Your answer to these questions determines the cut-scene story intro to the game and how you are presented opportunities to solve quests in the world.

Character creation was very nice but still limited in comparison to another NCSoft title, Aion,  unfortunately, however character creation is very true to the original game.  There are sliders for character height and graphical depictions for weight and musculature.  So you can be, within reason for your race, as short or as plump as you want.  Hair styles are not as numerous as I would have liked, but the hair is very well done, has movement, and has LENGTH!  Yes that’s right there is long hair in this game and more than one option for long hair.  I can’t tell you how pleased I was with the long hair choices but let me just say WOOOOOOHOOOOOO!!!  Make-up is pre-determined by the facial preset you pick.  Although you can change the shape of the facial preset for features, like eyes and mouth.  Overall character creation is solid.

I was skeptical about the total elimination of the Monk profession from the game and every character being able to heal themselves effectively.  My skepticism has been laid to rest.  Every class I tried could effectively heal themselves and others with no issues.  The ability to resurrect fallen players while out adventuring is also an excellent game mechanic.  Yes some professions can heal more effectively than others, Engineer and Elementalist spring to mind immediately, but every class has healing abilities.  A pure healing profession would feel out of place to be honest.

How was combat you might be wondering?  My somewhat jaded and burned-out on MMOs husband was enjoying combat so thoroughly that I heard him scream out repeatedly “THAT’S AWESOME” when I was out of the room!  Combat is fast paced, dynamic, and feels connected.  Skills are impactful to the enemy who reacts when you hit them.  The ability to swap-out weapons mid-fight and have the corresponding skills swap at the same time with the push of a button is perfectly implemented.  The range of weapon choices has improved dramatically from Guild Wars as well.  Underwater fight is immensely entertaining and you have separate weapon sets and skills for underwater combat.

If you enjoy Rift or WOW, then there is something here for you too.  The colors are over saturated, like WOW, which is a change from the first game.  The rifts from Rift are here in the form of Dynamic Events.  The game seems to have a little something from all popular MMOs to be honest.  Effective Leveling reduces your current level to match area you are currently playing, similar to Everquest 2 mentoring and self-mentoring; world events, daily quests, achievements, and the list goes on.  However, the borrowing doesn’t feel like they picked and pulled from the different games and threw it all in a blender and poured out Guild Wars 2.  The picked and pulled features feel natural in the environment and have created a highly entertaining, fun to play MMO cocktail.

Guild Wars 2 launches on August 28th with early access beginning three days prior.  I know what we’ll be playing at the end of next month.

The Secret World: Second Chance

The Secret World left a very bad taste in my mouth from open beta and that impression undoubtedly colored my reaction to the game when it released three weeks ago.  The game has been receiving rave reviews: Massively, Digital Trends, Now Gamer, Lorehound, and finally Gamespot; I realized that it was possible I had been too quick to judge and so I fired up the game this morning for a couple of hours.

The pictures above are just a couple of the ones I took this morning.  I still firmly believe that the character creation is the worst in recent memory.  I will not excuse Funcom for this no matter what, there is no excuse.  While the character I created this morning wasn’t as awful as on release day, she is by no means what I had pictured in my head or what I want to look at when I log-in.  Short hair, horrible facial features, crappy hairstyles, and no body sliders of any kind is unacceptable to me.  Character117470474_picture001 This is Pippa, and while not vomit inducing (barely) there is just something wrong with the angle of the head and neck.  I will never understand why player characters cannot look like these NPCs:

I’m going to leave character creation behind before I find it impossible to climb off my soapbox filled with disappointment and frustration.

Questing, combat, dialogue, and atmosphere are all top-notch.  There is a quality about the environment that sucks you in and refuses to let go.  London feels like an old world city and Kingsmouth feels like Maine (one of my favorite places on earth).  I didn’t do any zones other than London and Kingsmouth this morning, and barely scratched the surface of Kingsmouth.

  • Combat feels much more connected than it did in betas, which I attribute to improved sound environment from NPCs.
  • Quests are enjoyable and deep.  Sure there are go fetch quests but there is no way around that mechanic in an MMO without a pure-grind game mechanic.  The varied types of quests from investigation to sabotage will keep an intelligent player coming back for more.
  • Crafting has been VASTLY improved!!!! Pippa_picture018  I can’t tell you how happy I was with the crafting tutorial quests this morning.  There was a also a quest which taught you how to install a glyph, but my coffee deprived brain failed to a screenshot.
  • Cabal/Guild creation is simple, intuitive, and doesn’t require signatures of other players to establish.

Now for the things that were problems in beta and are still existing:

  • Chat font size and color is still not adjustable by the player.  Bring your reading glasses and be aware that white on gray is not your friend.
  • Text menus and tooltips are still white on gray text as well.
  • Character creation is abysmal

The cash store needs serious work.  The text is very hard to read for description of items.  The interface is user friendly but not one you want to spend a lot of time using.  There is just something intangible about the cash store that feels “off” to me.  There were a lot of items I expected to find in the store this morning that were missing, things like dresses, a way to gift to another player, 99% of the items in the store are character not account bound, and no crafting items.

Overall, second impression was MUCH improved from the first impression.  Will it replace Everquest 2 as my primary MMO?  No.  Is it something I will pick-up on a regular basis and visit?  Yes.  In general, the game is worth picking-up and playing, especially if you enjoy horror fiction.  Would I recommend it for casual gamers that don’t like to think for themselves or expect answers handed to them?  Absolutely not.

The Secret World: Unleashed

tsw_issue_one_en

Friday the Thirteenth is a good day to pick-up, or in my case retry, The Secret WorldAnnounced this morning, the first major game update, or Issue (after, of course, those fabulous crime noir magazines of a by-gone era), will be released 31 July 2012.  Entitled, Unleashed, the Issue will include:

  • New Missions
  • New Nightmare Mode Dungeons
  • Cross-Dimension Marketplace and mail
  • New NPC’s

My impressions from gameplay this morning in TSW will be posted, with pictures, later today.  As the press release makes very clear, The Secret World is a living world and it changes and adapts like the world we interact with everyday.  NPCs, building, quests, etc. that are here today may be gone forever in the blink of an eye.  That fact alone, makes TSW a very different experience than the competition.

Charity Auction raises $330,000 for St. Jude’s

Fall 2011, Blizzard put old server blades up for auction and the results were announced yesterday.

St. Jude’s will be receiving #330,000.00 US dollars as a result of Blizzard’s auction.  The money couldn’t go to a better cause and all those who participated in the auction are superstars in my book.   Blizzard is also to be commended for auctioning off old hardware and donating the proceeds to help children in need.

Ultima Forever

ss-big-gypsy

Bioware has announced the cross platform revival of Ultima Online, Ultima Forever: Quest for the Avatar.  The game is currently accepting beta applications.  The game will be available on the PC and the IPad and will be free!  The game is designed for the solo adventurer or up to small parties of 4 players.  Players can choose to play as a Fighter or Mage.  The new title is not an attempt to recreate Ultima Online, which frankly would be impossible, but an attempt to revitalize the franchise with fresh content and a fun romp through Britannia.  The game is currently in Alpha testing with a group of hardcore Ultima fans.
