Wish List for Changes to Games for 2014

Maybe it is a side effect of growing older, but my list for changes for games becomes a little longer every year.  It isn’t that I think any one game suffers or is unplayable, but with a few simple changes standardized across games, gaming life in general would be much improved.

My first wish is for area-wide auto loot to be implemented.  I much enjoy the auto-looting in Lord of the Rings Online.  Nothing is more convenient than loot automatically being deposited in your bags.  Yes, it can be inconvenient sometimes when your bags are cluttered with vendor trash, but that minor inconvenience is outweighed by never having to loot an enemy again.

WoWScrnShot_081513_145206

Next up on the wish list, mentoring. Everquest 2 and Rift both implement this feature enormously well.  It makes sense and allows for friends and family who have differing play time to still play together.  Turning off experience, doesn’t make it possible for a higher level character to effectively play with a lower level character without it being unbalanced and in the end power-leveling.

2012-07-26_163326

The ability to turn off experience directly from your experience toolbar.  EQ2 does this and it prevents the problem of out leveling a zone simply and elegantly.  This becomes more and more essential as games reduce the amount of experience required to reach maximum level.  Nothing is more irritating than constantly out-leveling zones and leaving stories unfinished because non-story content has become trivial.

EQ2_000011

Housing, for the love of all that is holy, HOUSING.  And not just any old housing, but housing as magnificent and immersive as the housing in EQ2.  I want someplace my characters can all home, display their spoils of questing, relax with a full hobbit second breakfast, or curl up and read a book.  I miss the housing in EQ2, and if there weren’t other issues preventing full enjoyment of the game, I’d still be playing it.  I don’t want small cramped hovels with over-priced rents and storage costs.  I want the ability to decorate and for all characters to be able to share the space.  I also want housing that looks like house, not some weird variant of housing that only vaguely resembles housing.

EQ2_000013

Shared banking and storage among all characters on the server.  How hard can this be to implement?  Personal storage and communal storage should be standard at this point.  And there should be separate storage for crafting materials shared among characters on a server.  Guild Wars 2 does this beautifully.  One of the few strong points of that game is the ability to send crafting materials to shared storage.

gw052

Cosmetic wardrobes and for this there are truly only two models to be followed: LOTRO and GW2.  GW2 has the most beautiful dyes and more importantly, find the dye once and it is yours forever.  Nothing I hate more than constantly having to search for the dye I want every time I want to dye a new piece of cosmetic clothing.  LOTRO has hands down the best cosmetic clothing system, minus the dye issue.  The ability to have multiple outfits to wear at a moments notice without changing or disturbing the stats on your battle armor is phenomenal.  I freely admit, my LOTRO characters change clothes frequently depending on mood and season.  Why can’t all games do this? Why can’t my casting class characters slip into heavy armor so they look intimidating if they want to, or why can’t me heavy plate warriors look less threatening and those surprise foes?

ScreenShot00002

I know I’m tilting at windmills.  I know despite he fact that I make sense and all games thieve from one another, no consensus amongst game designers and companies is magically going to unfold in the next year.  Doesn’t mean I am going to stop wishing that there will be dramatic changes for the better across all games or that new games releasing this year will come to understand that it is better to delay release and implement features from other games that a vast majority of players consider as standard.

Random Screenshots for MMO Tours this week

Pippa_picture022 (2)

Pippa at the Kindergarten on the Savage Coast in The Secret World.  Atmosphere here is seriously creepy, appropriate but creepy.

WoWScrnShot_111613_082545

Taalina the new Draenei paladin on Fizzcrank.  So, last thing I need is another character in WOW, but I need a Draenei that isn’t on an imbalanced PvP server and I need a woman Draenei to go through and kick Orc ass when the expansion releases.  I will be leveling her slowly and without heirlooms, gives me a good opportunity to close out some zones for my loremaster title.

WoWScrnShot_111513_061441

My Horde Shaman on Silvermoon.  She’s in her mid-40’s I pop-in, grab a couple of levels on her and then log right back out.  I think Blizzcon left a bad taste in my mouth for the Horde and I’m already Alliance biased by nature.  I will level her to 90 but I won’t be powering through it.

ScreenShot00010

Cilantro hanging out with the Elves in Rivendell.  Sometimes the scenery in LOTRO is just drop dead gorgeous that I find myself stopping just to take the random screenshot of nothing in particular.

gw017

I poked my head into Guild Wars 2, completed a quest and then logged right back out.  While the models for characters are pretty, I’m completely agnostic about my characters, the game, and the setting.  I have a feeling that Bronta here will be a long, long time (if ever) leveling to max.

I poked my head into SWTOR and Rift as well but did nothing in either.  SWTOR change regarding names is just irritating although I’m honest enough to admit that free-flight PvP in the upcoming expansion looks like fun.  Rift I can’t get any enthusiasm for at the moment.  The game is fun but it isn’t at the same time.

What keeps me long term interested in playing & coming back to ANY game?

ScreenShot00015

I’ve thought about this a lot recently and we will completely discount story for this posting because if any game doesn’t have a great story then there is no chance of keeping me interested for any length of time.

Games must have housing and wardrobe appearance slots.  These two items alone make all the difference in my long term interest in any game.

I played Oblivion eons and ages ago on the XBox 360, heck it was my introduction to the Elder Scrolls IP.  It may not have had the detailed customization options that Morrowind had, which my husband still laments to this day, but I knew I could log-in and my character had a house where she could catch a nap, brew some potions, or just spend the rest of eternity safely.

Everquest II has done housing and housing customization the flat out best I’ve ever seen in any game.  The options for housing are seemingly endless and the developers, and now the community, continually add to the housing diversity.  All of my EQ2 characters share one house, which I must admit I love.  They’ve all got their alters to their particular gods and their trophies from questing.  I love the pillows strewn about the floor and the critters that roam the home.

EQ2_000013

Lord of the Rings Online has a good wardrobe system as does Everquest II (appearance clothing).  However, neither game does it perfectly.  Both have stunningly beautiful armor and clothing models that my characters drool over but they both suffer from the same flaw.  No game offers enough wardrobe space to make it expansive enough to switch outfits as often as I’d like.  The Secret World has a pretty good wardrobe system which is perfect for a game set in the modern world with modern clothing, but a lot of their clothing is geared to a much younger player and none of my characters particularly want to walk around in what I consider slutty clothing.  Rift now offers a decent amount of wardrobe slots for in-game currency or real life cash.  Problem is none of my characters are that rich in-game and I’m not spending real life money on wardrobe slots.

EQ2_000124

I love the look of this NPC in Everquest II.

ScreenShot00022

My Guardian Hobbit in LOTRO never wears shoes but she does love a jaunty hat and on this fine day in Rivendell she was sporting her favorite hauberk.

The one thing Guild Wars and Guild Wars 2 do better than any of their competitors, and the only thing in my opinion, is the dye system.  Collecting dyes and not having them be consumed on use is brilliant and perfect system.  Other games need to adopt this model.  Yes they might lose out on some revenue but they would undoubtedly make up that revenue from players like me that won’t purchase a single use dye.

No game, to date, gets housing or wardrobe perfect.  Rift has a goodly number of wardrobe slots but dyes are consumed on use and they don’t have pink dyes.  Rift does have housing but it has yet to make an emotional connection with me.  The Secret World has a decent wardrobe closet but the clothes are too revealing and cannot be dyed.  Guild Wars 2 only has the dye system in it’s favor.  Everquest II has phenomenal and extensive housing but no dyes and limited wardrobe to one outfit.  My characters NEED many, many more wardrobe slots in Everquest Next!  The clothing and armor in the Everquest franchise is so well done and so varied texturally that limiting appearance clothing to one slot is simply criminal.  Lord of the Rings Online has beautiful clothing but dyes are consumed on use and wardrobe storage and slots are too limited.  LOTRO housing is also lacking in comparison with Everquest franchise.

Rift: Previous Owners Free to Play Starts NOW

2013-06-03_075445

The fine folks over at Trion Worlds and Rift made the fine decision to extend the free to play for all past owners of Rift forever yesterday afternoon.  Free to Play for the rest of the world doesn’t begin until June 12th, along with the implementation of the cash shop, but that is less that a week away now.

So, welcome back to Terlara and enjoy the journey.  But remember, if you want any of the previous bonuses for purchasing a box of the game or a digital upgrade, those purchases must be completed prior to the conversion on the 12th.

Rift: Free to Play Announced

2012-08-15_064551

Set your calendars for June 12th, Rift just announced that when Update 2.3 Empyreal Assault goes live Rift will be converting to a free-to-play model.  The FAQ for the change over can be found here and don’t worry if you are a subscriber, there are and will continue to be benefits to maintaining your subscription to the game.

If you haven’t tried it, Rift is immensely fun (especially PvP) and well worth playing both as a subscriber and as a freebie.  Admittedly, I find the constant opening of rifts annoying when I’m out trying to complete quests and get the story but the atmosphere is great in the game.

Lifestyle: I figured out why I had Burnout

Gallywix's Palace

So it dawned on me over the weekend why I had burnout on the MMO front and I blame Star Wars: The Old Republic.  Well, SWTOR isn’t solely to blame, it was the straw that broke the camel’s back truth be told.  I got my beloved Consular through the first chapter of the game and went from loving the story line, and therefore my character, to feeling let down and slogging through levels just to gain a level.  Then I just stopped playing all games, I couldn’t stand the mere thought of logging into any game.

Everquest 2 is just daunting, even double experience weekends can’t tempt me to log-in.  I don’t hate my characters, my guild makes me laugh, but those AA points are a roadblock I dread.  Literally they are speed bumps along the path to leveling.  I could have multiple characters to max level by now in Everquest 2 but for the AA roadblock.  I’m not looking for speed or power leveling but I was not enjoying the feeling of constantly running on a treadmill and gaining no ground.

Rift is just frustrating.  I love PvP in Rift but unfortunately rifts get in the way of PvE activities in the game.  For me, it completely detracts from the story in Rift.  It is a fun game, but I should have listened to my initial assessment when we were in the Rift beta (“there isn’t enough of a story line for me” is precisely what I told my husband).

I resubbed to WOW this morning.  I keep swearing it off and resubbing, hey it gives hubby great joy when he teases me whenever this happens.  I plan on playing at my pace and keeping chat off as much as possible.  Yeah I know, it’s a social game but hey to each their own.

So here’s my advice for those of you suffering from gaming burnout – take a couple of weeks off and do something completely unrelated.  I am making a public promise to myself that as soon as someone irritates me in game or I feel obligated to do something, I’m walking away and doing something else.

Winter Calendar of Events for Game Celebrations

gw006

Winter festivities are upon us and so here’s a list of games and their calendar for winter festivals.  The list is by no means complete but it at least covers the games we play, or have played in the last couple of years.

Everquest 2: Frostfell is set to begin on 13 December 2012 and runs through 10 January 2013

World of Warcraft: Winter Veil begins on 15 December 2012 and ends 2 January 2013

Lord of the Rings Online: Yule Festival begins 17 December 2012 through 2 January 2013

Guild Wars 2: Winter’s Day beings 14 December 2012 and concludes 3 January 2013

Star Trek Online: Q’s Winter Wonderland starts 6 December 2012 and ends 14 January 2013

Rift: Fae Yule event has no published dates for this year that I could discover but it is on their test server and a forum posting has developer comments indicating a new mount will be one of the possible rewards.

Roundup: Expansions, Updates, and Releases

2012-07-26_163326

The last week to ten days has been jammed packed with the release of titles from beta, expansions rolling out, and game updates hitting test servers much earlier than expected by player bases.

Rift’s first expansion Storm Legion was released on 13 November 2012 and has generally received positive reviews.  As readers know, we haven’t purchased it or played any of the content so I cannot comment on how it looks or the changes to the game.

Everquest II: Chains of Eternity also released on 13 November 2012.  The player base is thrilled and a lot of former players have returned revitalized about the game and its content

RaidersZ released on 20 November 2012 from Perfect World International.  It is a fantasy based. free=form class system game with the ability to transform monsters.  I haven’t played the game but the screenshots look beautiful, which is on par for the team over at Perfect World.

Star Wars: The Old Republic released Game Update 1.6, Ancient Hypergate, to the Public Test Server on 20 November 2012.  This game update brings with it new PvP Warzones and space combat missions.  SWTOR also released this new gameplay trailer with the successful launch of the conversion to free-to-play:

Rift: Storm Legion is Unleashed

Rift-Storm-Legion-prevew-thumb-large

Rift has unleashed it’s first expansion ever, Storm Legion, this week.   This is one expansive expansion, with the size of world tripling compared to the launch of the game.

Here are the highlights of the expansion details:

  • Four New Souls:
    • Defiler for Clerics
    • Harbinger for Mages
    • Tactician for Rogues
    • Tempest for Warriors
  • 10 new zones of content
  • Level cap increased to 60
  • 7 new dungeons, including expert versions and a new raid
  • New warfront for level 50 plus
  • Dimension, aka housing
  • Crafting level is now 375
  • Capes are now a part of armor

After the crushing disappointment with dimensions on the beta server, we did not purchase the expansion.  The poor implementation of housing was enough for us to decide not to upgrade our accounts.

The Week So Far

EQ2_000009

While I’ve been dealing with the cold that won’t go die, the world of gaming has been very busy this week.  Everquest 2 and Rift have both released expansions on Tuesday.  Tomorrow, Star Wars: The Old Republic released Game Update 1.5 which converts the game to Freemium.  And on the international front, China is hosting their gaming conference and Neverwinter is sharing beautiful new screenshots.

All of the above goodness will be covered in posts to follow.  Today is the first day in over a week where I’m reasonably capable of sitting down and writing a couple of posts.  The best part about it, is that I’m able to write and post successfully from my Surface.

Rift: Storm Legion Beta

2012-10-19_104017 SL beta dimension 1

Last night we both got beta keys to Storm Legion.  I was excited to try it out because housing was coming.  When they announced the beta open and the NDA lifted this morning, I logged on eagerly.  Once I looked at the new souls, which look interesting I’ll be honest, I hopped over to my first dimension (aka player housing).

When a game tells you there is going to be housing do you expect something more than a cave or a wee hut and a decent size front yard?  If so, DO NOT purchase Storm Legion.

2012-10-19_103703 SL beta dimensions

The above is basically all there is of one of the dimensions I previewed.  Sure there are beautiful scenes out your “front door” but there is squat else.  Oh big whoop I can put a dining room table outdoors so that I can have my dinner guests interrupted by a rift.  Ok, I don’t know if rifts actually spawn in dimensions but that’s what it felt like.

2012-10-19_103409 SL beta dimension

It doesn’t feel like any place any of my characters would call home.  It feels like an after thought, tacked onto the expansion to draw in new and returning players who love player housing.

Rift: Patch 1.11 Tempest Rising

2012-07-26_172607

The patch notes are so incredible long and detailed for Rift’s Patch 1.11 Tempest Rising, that Trion Worlds has broken the notes up into multiple forum postings.  Here are some of the highlights of those notes:

  • Cosmetic armor is no longer restricted solely to armor types your soul can equip
  • Every soul has received major changes
  • Planar attunement is now shared between all characters
    • Must log-in to all characters to accumulate all previously earned Planar Attunements
  • Crafting has under gone a revamp
  • Training costs from level 1-50 has been decreased
  • Hard caps for dodge and parry are now at 40%
  • Hit and Focus have been merged into a single stat, called Hit
  • Successful Block/Dodge mitigation is now capped at 30%
  • Mana regeneration is a fixed value that increases with level, intelligence and wisdom cannot change that rate

Rift: Introducing the Tactician Soul

Tactician_screen1_lg

Yesterday, Rift introduced the third new soul, Tactician a rogue soul, prior to the release of the first expansion Storm Legion.  Tactician is an offensive and healing soul, dealing elemental damage from a distance but forced to rely on secondary souls to maximum their offensive damage.  Most exciting of all is the ability to utilize a flamethrower as a weapon!  Which means damage if in a frontal cone in front of the rogue and thus situational awareness is of vital importance.

Rift: Tempest

Warrior_screen1_lg

Rift revealed the new warrior soul yesterday afternoon:  Get ready to be a Tempest Warrior!  This is a ranged warrior build, dealing lighting based attacks from melee weapons.  Their up-close and personal melee abilities and damage is greatly reduced.  The reveal video contains a wealth of information and the highlights include the following:

  • Tempest: AOE Build, 30+ meter DPS range, Stationary invisibility
  • Warlord: DPS soul with tank/survivability utility talents added,
  • Void Knight: Magical Mitigation tank
  • Riftblade: DPS souls, self-heals and elemental attacks added
  • Reaver: Tank soul with mitigation lowered and DPS increased
  • Beastmaster: Support role through DPS, pet usage and now has all former Warlord abilities
  • Champion: DPS soul with focus on AOE
  • Paragon: DPS soul with single target focus
  • Paladin: Physical mitigation tank

Overall, the class changes and the new soul have me very interested in trying out abilities when the expansion launches on 13 November 2012.

World of Warcraft: What WOW Could Borrow from Other Games

WoWScrnShot_090612_075329

Well, I finally got around to claiming my Spectral Gryphon … thanks Honey, I know how much you wanted to resub to WOW.  But all my characters look awesome on her so I will always smile when I fly around on her.

So, all of my characters are 85 except my druid who is at 84, half way to 85 though.  I wanted them to all be able to queue for the Theramore event when it starts a week from tomorrow.  I haven’t picked up Tides of War yet but next time we are out and about running errands I will be picking it up.  Although I might just go ahead and pick-up the e-book instead.

As I’ve leveled the last couple of weeks, I’ve realized that WOW could really benefit from borrowing a couple of ideas from the competition.

Mentoring: While leveling in WOW isn’t difficult or necessarily time consuming, it would be extremely nice if mentoring were possible in WOW.  Then friends and couples who play together but don’t have equal play time, could stop worrying about out leveling friends.  Everquest 2 and Rift have both implemented mentoring seamlessly into the game.  No NPC intervention required, just adjust your level to your parties and off you go to experience content together.  Everquest 2 also has the brilliant self-mentoring option which does cost gold, but allows you to mentor down to experience content without being capable of wiping out the entire zone.

Instant Adventures and/or 2 Person Instances: Rift has both of these and both are brilliant, alternative ways to level.  Instant adventures automatically party up and mentor higher level characters to the appropriate level for the content.  It offers rewards based on “quests” completed and that are appropriate for the natural level of the character.  Two person instances are great for people that solo or prefer not to be a member of a huge guild.  It is especially nice if you only have a couple of hours to play at night and don’t want to hang around waiting for a pick-up group that may or may not successfully complete a five man instance.  Scenarios are a good step in the right direction but from what I’ve read recently they are going to be very difficult and I still will need another person if hubby and I want to try a scenario.

Armor Dyes: Guild Wars and Guild Wars 2, among other games, have the ability to change the color of armor.  Doesn’t sound like a big deal but it is something I really, really wish WOW would put in the game.  I am so very, very tired of brown, drab armor that may or may not have some muted colors tossed in.  It is nice that they have implemented Transmogrification but I’m still stuck with the same drab armor as others.  It may be the armor of my choice appearance wise, but it is still drab in color.  Honestly, I’m a girl I want armor that has some color to it!

I’m not complaining and I don’t think WOW needs to revamp itself entirely to emulate the competition and new games.  I do think that it can reinvent itself over time and keep itself revitalized and interesting.  It’s time to realize that gamers aren’t all in our teens and twenties, thinking raiding is the ultimate accomplishment, or that “catering” to the “casuals” is a bad thing. (Personally, when any game has scheduled times where you must show up for events like raids then it is no longer a game and it has become a job.)

Rift: On Why it Didn’t Crush WOW

2012-08-23_100955

A couple of weeks ago I pondered why Rift didn’t crush WOW.  I think I have an answer to my own question finally.  Rift has many, many great qualities I adore in a video game but there are two things that drive me batty when I log on at odd hours.

The first is feeling like I’m the only person currently logged into the game.  This has happened to me more than once when a bout of insomnia hits.  I log on and even though I’m in one of the capital cities, there have literally been no other players around.  It’s weird.

The second thing, and I think for me this one is a much larger thorn in my side, is questing constantly interrupted by rifts.  I understand they are vital to the lore and such, but honestly there are times I just want to quest and soak up the lore without being attacked by planar monsters.  Yeah I know, questing isn’t what the cool kids do but thank god I’ve never been one of the cool kids!

Don’t get me wrong, I will continue to play Rift.  I’ve just decided to level my characters exclusively via PvP or instant adventures.  Clairee, pictured above, is just shy of level 39.  I’m enjoying the game very much still, I just wish it didn’t feel so empty sometimes.

Rift: Patch 1.10 Announcement

2012-08-15_064551

Rift announced (here and here) this morning the changes that will be forthcoming in the last pre-expansion patch:

  • Open world groups/public groups
  • Cross Faction Trade
  • Looking for Dungeon Tool
  • Entering a Dungeon/Raid
  • Instant Adventure
  • Weddings
  • Chat (channels & tells including cross shard)
  • Quest sharing
  • Guilds
  • Mail
  • Friends List & Ignore
  • Chronicles
  • PvP stat normalization
  • Group Queuing for Conquest/Warfronts

There will be some restrictions placed on PvP shards when the above changes go live.  The changes are very similar to Everquest2 which in it’s own right, is a highly successful game with a very loyal following.  However, this can also be seen as an attempt to consolidate factions because of low player population numbers.

Rift: Coming Soon the Storm Legion Battlemage Soul

Video begins at 12:30

Yesterday the mage development team of Rift partnered with mmorpg.com to reveal the new soul for the mage in the upcoming Storm Legion expansion.  The new soul is called Harbinger and is a melee dps soul.  There is development gameplay footage contained in the video as well as various answers on other mage soul callings.  Harbingers will still wear cloth and utilize staves, but magically those staves are transformed into a choice of three two-handed weapons depending on the role you are fulfilling.  The gameplay almost exclusively shows that scythe in combat but the claymore was also shown.  There will be a two-hand axe as well but the artwork for that weapon is not ready for reveal.

No other amazing surprises come from the video.  The next soul will be revealed in about a month and no hint at which soul that would be unfortunately.

Rift PvP

I decided to dip my toes into the PvP pool this morning while playing Rift.  I was hoping to find another Alterac Valley style game, I didn’t, but what I did find was great fun.  I decided to bring my level 14 Necro/Warlock and much to my amazement she did amazingly well in PvP.  There are two maps available between level 10-19, Library of the Runemasters and Black Garden.  I died far less often than I thought I might and ended up with a respectable 130 plus kills in the couple of matches I played.  The leveling rate is slower but I don’t mind that.  I had a heck of a lot of fun and will be going back to explore much more of the PvP Rift offers.
