Firefall: Beta Weekend

Firefall beta began this morning and I promptly logged in to try it out.  Half an hour after beta began, my computer is uninstalling the game.  I have little patience for betas that can’t grab and hold my interest in the first five to ten minutes, and when the character creation is limited that time is even less.  With two face options and three hair styles, I knew my interest in the game was going to be short lived.

The game was sluggish, yeah alright it is a beta but it is a beta Red 5 Studios deemed worthy of opening to the public for 48 hours, so servers should have been far more responsive then they were.  The graphics are over the top large, cartoonish, and awful.  Artwork leaves a lot to be desired.  The voice acting I heard was awful, really one of the first voices you throw at me is a barely understandable Russian?  By the time the tutorial forced me to buy a new class and equip it, I had enough.  Option menu is difficult to read, and a convulsed mess.

If I want a MMO that is also a shooter, I can go play far more polished released, or about to be released, games like Planetside2 and Defiance.

Star Wars: The Old Republic: Expansion Video First Look

Bioware released the first look of Makeb this morning in the above video for Star Wars: The Old Republic.  Interested parties can find more details on The Rise of the Hutt Cartel here.  The expansion is due out this spring, no date yet specified, and it looks like the Hutt’s have been quite busy since the events in The Fatal Alliance by Sean Williams (great read and an excellent audio book by the way).

Firefall: Open Beta Weekend

Firefall, the MMO Sci-Fi third person shooter, is opening the beta doors this weekend to the general public.  So if you are interested in a shooter MMO, head over to the beta sign-up page to gain access from Friday morning to late Sunday evening.

Star Wars: The Old Republic: Game Update 1.7 Return of the Gree

The Gree are coming, in Game Update 1.7 for Star Wars: The Old RepublicThe Return of the Gree is coming soon and will bring a recurring event to the game for level 50 players and introduce a reputation system to the game.  The recurring event is called Relics of the Gree and will allow the player to gain new weapons and armor.  The Galactic Reputation System will be earned for your legacy and that should significantly alleviate any grind associated with the introduction of a reputation system.

What Does Fox News, SWTOR, and You have in common?

So, what do the fine folks over a Fox News have to say about the coming expansion for Star Wars: The Old Republic?  Well, apparently it’s an expansion occurring on a gay planet for gay people.  Yep, you read that right folks … according to Fox News it’s an expansion devoted to a gay planet for gay people.  Fox focuses solely on the inclusion of same-gender romance arcs becoming available on Makeb and makes outrageous claims concerning the outrage of the player base.  The story fails to cover the expansion in any detail or the facts concerning same-gender romances.

So, once again let’s clarify same-gender romances will be available on Makeb when the expansion launches this spring.  These CHOICES will not be available with companions in the game and are options for players to explore if they so desire.  The planet of Makeb is not “gay”, as if a whole planet could be “gay”, nor is it a “gay” expansion.  Fox decided to latch onto one small aspect of an expansion that would sensualize their base of readers and viewers.

The universe of Star Wars is an inclusive universe and how can any rational, thinking adult believe that allowing same-gender romance arcs turns an entire planet or expansion gay?  Instead it’s just an option for those players uncomfortable, marginalized, or exclude with current romance options available in the game.  I applaud Bioware, EA, and the team at SWTOR for following through on their promise to include same-gender romance arcs into the story and for building an inclusive, accepting universe rather than an exclusive, judgmental, bigoted, and hateful universe.

Wizardry Online Launch Delayed

SOE has announced that the anticipated release of Wizardry Online tomorrow, 16 January 2013, has been delayed by two weeks.  The reason for the delay is that the development team needs time to put more polish on the final product of the hardcore fantasy-MMO.

Video Games, the Gun Debate, and Convenient Escape Goats

In light of today’s delegates at the Vice-President’s conference on what to do about gun control, I am republishing here my personal opinion on the matter in full rather than just a link.

The Gun Control Debate or How the First World has Lost Its Mind

Posted on December 21, 2012 by Stitchersflock

What happened a week ago in Newton, CT was horrible and a tragedy that no family should have to face because they send their child to school.  My prayers go out to all those extended families and the surrounding communities affected by the tragedy.

Since news of the tragedy broke the US media, and I’m sure  the global media, has been expounding and preaching on how gun control would have prevented the tragedy from occurring and how it will prevent future tragedies from being enacted.  Media spouting nonsense to gloss over and minimize the real issue and prevent real change that will do far more to solve the problem then gun control laws that can never, and will never, prevent a person intent on doing evil  from acquiring the means to do so.

First world countries, like the US, Canada, and Germany, all suffer from the same fundamental societal flaw … rampant consumerism and abdication of parental responsibilities.  Since the end of World War II, first world countries have become focused on the acquisition of goods, always needing and demanding to have the newest and latest fad.

A little personal history is in order here.  I grow up in a typical middle class family in California, I had all the privileges that comes with but I also earned those privileges.  My parents never divorced, in fact 2013 will see them celebrate their 46th wedding anniversary, and my mom stayed home to raise my brother and I.  We had chores that were expected to be completed and failure to do so resulted in consequences.  We weren’t handed the latest and greatest toy because we asked or the neighbor’s kid got what we wanted.  We were expected to have and maintain good grades, participate in after school activities (so long as they did not impact academics), and to respect our elders.  Any of the family friends, neighbors, or church members had no qualms about telling our parents when we stepped out of line when they weren’t around.  If we were out, our parents knew where we were, who we were with, and what we were doing and if we were caught lying, there were consequences.  My husband and I aren’t blessed with children of our own, despite years of trying and failing, but if we had been so blessed then they would be raised like I was.

Today’s parents have gone insane.  They would rather hand over their infant child to be raised by strangers then risk living on one salary and not having the latest and greatest new gadget or car every year or two.  We trust total strangers with the most precious gift the world gives us and then rush off to work.  We cram kids into after school events to make sure someone else is always responsible for our children so that we can keep working.  Then parents rush home to collect said children, drive through and pick up dinner and then the television resumes babysitting the children.  Children don’t play outside any more, they are incapable of having a face to face conversation with an adult, they play violent video games unsupervised, they skip school, and engage in sexual activity at far to early an age.

Children aren’t to blame and neither are guns, violent video games, or computer manufacturers.  Parents and society are solely responsible for the school shootings in this country, sky rocketing costs to raise a family, and the selfish mannerisms of children.  If your child asks for a video game, do you research it and play it for yourself to see what the game is like and if it is appropriate for your child?  Or do you simply hand the child the game in the hopes he will leave you alone so you can go back to working and texting?  Do we as a society accept foul language, poor grammar, and lacking basic social skills as acceptable because they come from someone else’s child and it isn’t our place to correct such behavior?  Since when did social shaming lose its role as a tool for society and parents to raise a child?  Do you really need a McMansion, or a new car every year?  Do you need a new iphone just because Apple released one?  Why are children running around with cell phones?  Are they expecting business calls?

It’s time as a society to realize that the only person that is capable of raising a child is a parent.  Yes that means sacrifices will have to be made but that is what it takes to be a parent.  You as a parent are responsible for the actions of your child and that responsibility isn’t abolished because you were at work.  Kids don’t need cell phones, packed schedules, or the best house on the block.  What every child needs is to be shown love and respect, to know that there are repercussions and consequences to unacceptable behavior, to have parents that parent and then  grow into friends when they reach adulthood, and to know that when they excel at tasks there are rewards.  Just because you played on a team or participated in an event, doesn’t entitle your child to a trophy, participation is it’s own reward and it needs to be treated as such.

Society and parents are responsible for tragedies like Newton.  We don’t need gun control laws or restraints on video games.  We NEED parents who are parents that are involved in the lives of the children actively.  We NEED a society that understands that social blame serves a very vital function in the raising of children.  And most of all, we NEED  the idiots in Washington, D.C., the NRA, corporations, and lobbyists everywhere to sit down, shut the hell up, and legislate family friendly laws like tax breaks for two parent families where one parent stays home to raise the children, a living minimum wage, and corporations which support families with decent insurance and vacation plans.  Only parents can raise decent, morale, ethical children and only society can support parents with changes to the way we view, treat, and respect families.

My opinion hasn’t changed.  Blaming gun owners or restricting the amount of ammunition a magazine can hold is utter crap.  Blaming video games or movies is even more so.  Creating a national registry of mentally ill people is going to PREVENT those who need mental health treatment from seeking said treatment.

Parents and society at large are to blame.  A loaded gun or a knife or a keyboard are inanimate object incapable of acting without human intervention.  Sounds trite but the truth is just that blunt.  Parents are solely responsible for their abdication of their parental responsibilities and the government’s failure to state that as a cause of gun violence and violent crime is an abdication of governmental responsibilities.

It is time that, WE, the American people, remind ourselves and our government why we have a Second Amendment.  Here are a couple of highly relevant quotes from the Founding Father’s debating the Second Amendment:

No Free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms. (Thomas Jefferson, Proposal Virginia Constitution, 1 T. Jefferson Papers, 334)

What, Sir, is the use of a militia? It is to prevent the establishment of a standing army, the bane of liberty.... Whenever Governments mean to invade the rights and liberties of the people, they always attempt to destroy the militia, in order to raise an army upon their ruins." (Rep. Elbridge Gerry of Massachusetts, spoken during floor debate over the Second Amendment [ I Annals of Congress at 750 {August 17, 1789)

I ask, sir, what is the militia? It is the whole people, except for few public officials. (George Mason, 3 Elliot, Debates at 425-426)

The Constitution shall never be construed....to prevent the people of the United States who are peaceable citizens from keeping their own arms (Samuel Adams, Debates and Proceedings in the Convention of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, 86-87)

Firearms stand next in importance to the Constitution itself. They are the American people's liberty teeth and keystone under independence ... From the hour the Pilgrims landed, to the present day, events, occurrences, and tendencies prove that to insure peace, security and happiness, the rifle and pistol are equally indispensable . . . the very atmosphere of firearms everywhere restrains evil interference - they deserve a place of honor with all that is good (George Washington)

And for those out there that think times have changed since James Madison wrote the Bill of Rights and the Founding Fathers fought for independence from Great Britain.  You are right.  Those very same men would be appalled, outraged, and embarrassed at the State of the Union.  Their statements made more than two hundred years ago are just as relevant today, the only difference is that we have become complacent and unquestioning as a nation.

Planetside 2: 30 January 2013 Update

Game Update 2 for Planetside 2 will be released on 30 January 2013 as announced by Matt Higby, Senior Developer of the game for Sony Online.  Highlights of the upcoming patch include:

  • Performance increases, particular for older GPU’s
  • Experience system enhancements – players with a higher kill count are worth far more than players with very low kill counts
  • Server transfer tokens will become available in the Depot
  • UI improvements
  • New weapon, SMG, for all factions

The team over at SOE remains very positive about the state of the game and committed to frequent and open communication with the player base.

Defiance: First true cross over television and MMO (Updated)

Defiance, set to premiere on Syfy in April 2013 is the first true cross over game that involves a television series and a MMO.  The MMO is being produced by Trion World (the producers of Rift).  The video makes almost no reference to the game itself, but beta signups to the game can be found here.  Personally, I think the series looks amazing and so I’m doubly thrilled I’ve been signed up for the beta for a while now.

Update:  Here is the trailer for the MMO aspect of Defiance:

The Repopulation: Beta Coming this Spring

Currently in Alpha testing, The Repopulation has announced that beta will begin this Spring.  An Alpha video from this summer can be found here and alpha/beta applications are located here

Repopulation is a self-described sandbox MMO title with a focus on PvP and player creativity.  Players have the ability to create their own, unique third faction to battle against the established two faction system created by the development team.  The most exciting thing of interest to former Star Wars Galaxies players is the newest skills in the game, Entertainer.

World of Warcraft: Patch 5.2 Rise of the Thunder King

WOW’s Patch 5.2 went live on the PTR immediately following the start of the New Year.  There are extensive patch notes to be found here, but here are the highlights:

  • New daily quest hub, Isle of the Thunder King
  • New raid, Throne of Thunder with 15 raid bosses
  • Continuation of the legendary quest for Wrathion
  • Two new world bosses and new world boss system
  • Warlocks who have completed the quest chain will be able to acquire green fire
  • Changes incoming for every class

So, if you are a WOW player, head on over to the first release of the patch notes and see how your characters are changing.

World of Warcraft: Swift Windsteed

Are you an avid mount collector in WOW or are you a new player that just lacks the gold to purchase riding and your first mount? If so, for a mere $25 you too can own the latest Blizzard store mount.  Like other store mounts, this purchase applies to all current and future characters and increases in riding level as your character does.  Enjoy the cloud trotting goat throughout your adventures in Azeroth.

Tera: Going Free-to-Play

In what can be the least surprising announcement of the new year, En Masse announced this morning that Tera will be free-to-play starting next month.  The struggling title has posted a lengthy FAQ to answer all of your questions should you be interested in trying the game out.  I highly doubt we will be popping back in for a visit, game lacked the teeth to keep us interested for more than five minutes.

Star Wars:The Old Republic: Additional Character Slots

Screenshot_2013-01-04_11_45_47_950473

Star Wars: The Old Republic released new Cartel Market items at the conclusion of weekly maintenance. Most interesting item included in patch notes was the ability to purchase additional character slots for 600 cartel coins per slot.  If of you’ve always had dreams of building an army of smugglers then break out the cartel coins and enjoy.

On a personal note, my consular easily defeated Lord Vivicar last week after a couple of armor upgrades to Fess’s armor.

Consoles: Used Games and their future

Console users have reason to be concerned about the details released today regarding Sony’s patent issued in September 2012.  The patent essentially has the potential to eliminate the used game market for Sony gaming consoles.  Quoting the patent,

A technology of digital rights management (DRM) is introduced to prevent the electronic content from being used unlimitedly. Typically, DRM is a technology for the prevention of the unlimited copy of electronic content. To this end, the inventor recognized that there are cases where it is difficult to suitably restrict the use of electronic content, stored in the recording medium like DVD and commercially traded.

Translated into plain English, it requires a usage code to be tied to the player account and the player’s device to run the hard copy of the game.  Gone would be the days of purchasing used games or renting them from sources such as Gamefly

Sony has not stated publically that this patent will be applied to the future, as of yet unannounced, PS4.  But it does raise all kinds of unanswered questions regarding the console and families:

  • Do all members of the family have to purchase games individually?
  • What about coop games that run off one disc?
  • How does this DRM technology affect games downloaded onto the console directly from the Playstation Network?

Should Sony go through with implementation of this technology on the PS4 and not answer questions directly related to same household users, I would expect to see a severe decline in the market share of the Playstation console.  I understand that developers and manufacturers have concerns about not getting a percentage cut of the used game and rental game market, but truthfully there are better solutions.  Here are just a couple that spring to mind:

  • Stop manufacturing needless discs and make all games immediately available for download – should reduce the cost to procure for the consumer and drastically reduce the used game market going forward
  • Offer packages with tiered pricing, that allows a console to play any game in the Production Catalog for a year – i.e. Console access to EA Sports for $200 for a year
  • If discs can’t go away (inconceivable to me but assuming), then drastically reduce the packaging and the price point, allowing more consumers to purchase games on a whim and not run the risk of burning $60 bucks on a crappy game.

Star Wars: The Old Republic: State of the Game #2

Screenshot_2013-01-02_11_27_43_519913

Jeff Hickman, Executive Producer of Star Wars: The Old Republic released his second State of the Game Developer Blog.  The posting covers four areas of interest to players:

  1. End Game Content (aka Elder Content)
  2. PvP
  3. Copy to Public Test Server
  4. Same Gender Romance

End Game Content remains a priority for the developers at SWTOR.  The plans for the coming year include The Rise of the Hutt Cartel expansion, new operations and flashpoints, new PvP, and new difficulty modes.  The team is looking at ways to keep all play styles engaged and active at max level.

World PvP is difficult for the team at Bioware to implement.  New warzones and PvP seasons are instead the primary focus of the developers.  There will be some open world PvP in the coming year, but it will be limited to contested zones.  And truthfully, I have no problem with this form of implementation of PvP.  It opens PvP up to a much broader player base than those that play on PvP servers and desire the constant threat of ganking and being unable to complete objectives.

The long awaited and begged for ability to copy a live character to the Public Test Server (PTS) is coming!  This ability will be available in the early part of the year.  The most welcomed news out of this State of the Game blog is that character transfers are coming later this year.  Too late for many players but better late than never.  Personally it will be nice to be able to transfer over a couple of characters that are orphaned on a server we do not play.

Same gender romance has long been asked for and promised for SWTOR.  It is coming, limited fashion at first but it is coming.   Due to design implementation difficulties unforeseen by the development staff, it will not be implemented for companion characters.  However, with the release of The Rise of the Hutt Cartel expansion this spring, there will be several same gender romance options available with NPC’s on Makeb.

Lifestyle: One Father’s Solution to Gaming Addiction

You know the proverbial joke about the gamer who lives in his parent’s basement playing video games all hours of the day?  One frustrated father in China has gone to extreme lengths, he hired virtual assassins to kill his 23-year-old son every time he logged in.

The frustrated father only wanted his adult child to get and keep a job, which isn’t at all unreasonable since his gaming habit resulted in poor grades in high school.  And this is China after all, so undoubtedly this is the only child in the family, so perhaps a better time to deal with the addiction would have been let’s say 10 years earlier?

We all get caught up in games and gaming occasionally but when those that love you are telling you that you need to step away from the console or the pc, maybe , just maybe, gamers should listen and visit and interact with the real world more often.  I’m just as guilty or getting caught up in games but I try, sometimes I have to force myself, to step away and do housework or go for a walk instead of completing that next quest or dying to the boss one more time. (Lord Vivicar I’m talking about you here smacking my poor Consular four levels below you into next week repeatedly yesterday.  Oh your time will come buddy, your time will come!)  Wait I’m sorry, time to step away and get some coffee and hit the treadmill.

2012: The Bad, the Good, and the Oh Crap Games of the Year

ScreenShot00039

2012 Holiday season is officially at a close for most of us now and so here are our The Bad, The Good, and the Oh Crap games of 2012.

The Bad:

2012 Biggest Disappointment: Mists of Pandaria expansion for World of Warcraft was the biggest disappointment for us.  Yes the team over at Blizzard did a fabulous job on improving questing and story-telling in WOW and the expansion was much better received than Cataclysm.  However, after you get to level 90 on one character (at least when we stopped playing) you were faced with an incredibly long grind of reputation to gain access to the next tier of questing and rendered the playing of alts a daunting and crushing prospect.  I admit it, I fell for Ghostcrawler’s promise that the game was quest friendly and not solely focused on end-game.  I knew better but deep down, i wanted to believe.

2012 Most Overhyped:  Easiest category of the them all, Guild Wars 2 was by far the most overhyped game of the year.  If you are going to build a game around the ideas cobbled together from other games, then the game had better be able to stand the test of time.  Less than six months post-release and the game is in a sorry state,  If you didn’t jump on the bandwagon in the beginning then do not pick up Guild Wars 2 as beginning leveling areas are most often devoid of other players thereby making it impossible to complete “dynamic” events.

2012 Worst Game of the Year: The Secret World wins this category because there are so few things Funcom handled well with the game and it, by far, has the worst and ugliest character creation system for any AAA game out there.  If you are going to have the balls to claim, play the way you want, then dammit Funcom why did you build and release a game where all the characters are forced by the game’s engine to be the physique?  The game had, and continues to have, so much potential in the questing system but the lousy combat, character creation, poor optimization make this the worst game of the year.

The Good:

2012 Biggest Surprise:  Biggest surprise of the year was Planetside 2.  Admittedly, it isn’t a game we play but it was something we both tried in beta.  If you like shooters than this is definitely the MMO for you.  You might be wondering why a game we don’t actively play won the category, quite simply I didn’t think Sony would be able to pull of the the revamp of the game and still meet the publishing deadline.  SOE proved me wrong and released a game that has been very well received by critics and players alike.

2012 Best Expansion: Riders of Rohan from Turbine for Lord of the Rings Online was easily the best expansion of the year and we don’t yet have characters that have reached Rohan.  However the overall gaming improvements the expansion brought to the old world of LOTRO is enough to win this contender filled category.  The fact that loot automatically loots itself into my bags is enough to blow the competition away.  Other gaming companies need to talk to Turbine about how they do this and implement it immediately.

2012 Game of the Year: Star Wars: The Old Republic went through a lot of growth, changes, and revisions during the first full year of release.  However much the perceived lack of developer communication drove players from the game in the early month of 2012, or the griping of players who unreasonably expected an “end” game as robust as WOW’s, the team over a Bioware consistently delivered an improved game this year that maintained it’s story telling hear while making improvements to the health of the gaming community and the state of the game.  SWTOR is the game we consistently returned to throughout the year and the game stayed true to it’s story foundation despite pressures otherwise.

Oh Crap:

2012 Biggest Waste of Money: There would be quite a discussion for this title around here since we bought two AAA titles that we aren’t playing and an expansion we no longer play.  Both AAA titles, TSW and GW2 are now buy-to-play games but TSW will have to beat GW2 simply because we gambled on two lifetime subscriptions and lost.  The conversion from Funcom was poorly handled for lifetime subscribers and left a bad taste that ensures no more dollars spent on Funcom titles in the future.

2012 Made You Scratch Your Head and go HUH?: Two game expansions tie for this dubious honor, Riders of Rohan for LOTRO and Chains of Eternity for Everquest 2.  Their price points were, and continue to remain, insane for a purely digitally released product.  When you charge well in excess of $50 for a digital expansion, there better be plenty of goodies included along with  amazing gameplay and content.  Both games delivered on gameplay and content but goodies could have and should have been more for both titles.  The studios both appeared a little cash starved at their price points for the expansions.  Development costs can be recuperated through more sales at a lower price point than missed sales because of a ridiculous price point for a digital expansion.

2012  Best Tie Ins: SWTOR wins this easily.  The books that flush out the lore are simply amazing.  Earlier in the year I read, Fatal Alliance by Seam Williams and I was hooked. I’m currently finishing up the second book, Deceived by Paul S. Kemp and then will be devouring and savoring, Revan by Drew Karpyshyn.  The newly released forth book, Annihilation by Drew Karpyshyn.  Why more gaming companies haven’t figured out the tie-in concept baffles me.

2013

2012 saw a shifting in our overall gaming patterns, stepping outside our respective comfort zones and trying new and different games.  i highly doubt it is a pattern that will be repeated this year.  I know I have my three core MMO’s I play, Everquest 2, LOTRO, and SWTOR and I don’t think anything will change that this year (admittedly The Elder Scrolls Online stands the best chance).  There will also be a return to more console gaming around here as we discovered in the last week or so, we missed too many titles in 2012.
